Most of us have a good store of wheat, oats, beans, sugar and salt for our longer term food storage needs. But many overlook a critical component of any food storage--cooking oil. Those who have thought to include it often buy a bulk container of vegetable oil or lard. Did you know that these items last less than a year on your shelf? Look at the following table comparing the shelf-life of various cooking oil options:

Shelf Life Comparison

Product Shelf Life
Coconut Oil 5 Years
Crisco 2 Years
Vegetable Oil 6 Months; 1 year Refrigerated
Lard 6 Months; 1 year Refrigerated
Olive Oil 6 Months; 1 year Refrigerated

Health Properties of Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been used for centuries as a vital source of food for health and general well being in traditional communities of tropical regions. Recent research verifies traditional beliefs that the coconut palm is “The Tree of Life” and that, just like any other pure, whole food, coconuts and virgin coconut oil have a significant role to play in a well balanced, nutritious diet.

Coconut oil is a saturated fat, but not the kind your doctor has warned you about. Studies have shown that this uniquely curative oil actually has innumerable health benefits, ranging from disease prevention to anti-aging.

Coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils on earth with the following health benefits and properties:

  • Rich in MCT’s - Medium chain fatty acids.  Other saturated fats, like butter, contain long-chain fatty acids which are detrimental to one’s health
  • Coconut Oil is a healthy saturated fat containing 50% lauric acid which is found in human breast milk to support the infant’s immune system
  • No cholesterol, trans or hydrogenated fats.
  • Provides immediate source of energy
  • Supports healthy metabolic function and  promotes weight loss.
  • Coconut oil is an MCT (medium-chain trigyceride) oil which is digested differently in the body than other fats. Instead of storing all MCTs as fat, the liver convers them directly to ketone bodies, which are then available for use as energy. (For more information you are welcome to read Bruce Fife N.D. article on Coconut Oil and Medium-Chain Triglycerides)
  • Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal properties
  • New research shows coconut oil appears to provide fuel for your brain cells in the form of ketone bodies and may support the body’s efforts to fight Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s chorea, Multiple sclerosis, ALS, type I and type II diabetes and a number of other conditions that involve a defect in transport of glucose into neurons and other cells. • Promotes healthy skin and hair
